DOCTORS DEMYSTIFY CURRENT SCIENCE FOR EXPERIENCED HAND THERAPISTS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The hand therapist will receive an intensive review of upper limb anatomy, relevant biomechanics, and a current perspective on wound healing of the various tissues that constitute the upper limb. Upon completion of the course, the registrant will be able to
- describe in detail the gross anatomy, including common anomalies, of the upper extremity, including the brachial plexus
- identify the anatomical structures of the upper extremity on cross-sectional displays
- describe the current concepts of wound healing for musculoskeletal tissues
- recognize the appearance of bone, tendon, muscke, nerve, skin, and subcutaneous tissue on histological section
- describe the basic pharmacology of anti-inflammatory and anti-rejection drugs commonly used for upper extremity disorders
- describe the biomechanical principles on which treatments for bone, tendon, muscle, and joint conditions in the upper limb are based
- describe the scientific basis of commonly used therapeutic modalities
- identify and name the carpal bones both individually, on x-rays of normal wrists, and on x-rays showing common wrist pathologies
- formulate patient management plans based on current science
- educate patients about the current scientific basis of their diagnoses and treatments
TEACHING METHODS
- MODEL MAKING: flexor tendons and sheaths, brachial plexus, collagen cross linking
- HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATIONS: intrinsic/extrinsic motors, tenodesis, tendon repair
- ELECTRONIC MEDIA: computer-generated anatomy, tenolysis, Dupuytren's excision
- LEARNING REINFORCEMENTS: self-assessment exams, quiz games
- LECTURES: current concepts of healing in bone, tendon, muscke, skin, cartilage, nerve
- DISCUSSIONS: improving the inscience, answering your clinical questions
